Jewelry adds something special to our lives. It is beautiful, but it also holds sentimental memories and can be passed on through families. It is used to recognize accomplishments and mark milestones in our lives. But our prized jewels don’t stay looking new forever. Our silver, gold, or platinum is exposed to dust, lotions, hair spray, perfume, and much more throughout its wear. At some point, it will need to be cleaned. Before you head out to the jewelry store, try these simple tips using items in your home to get your jewelry shining like new again.
Toothbrush
The bristles of a soft toothbrush are perfect for getting in the nooks and crannies of ring and necklace settings. You can use toothpaste mixed with warm water to softly scrub. Make sure you rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean, soft cloth.
Baking Soda Solution
Place your jewelry in a container, such as a small bowl. Add water to cover and add baking soda. This will produce bubbles which will clean the buildup on the jewelry. Let it soak for about five minutes, remove and wipe with a clean, soft cloth. This is good for gold, silver, and diamonds. It is not recommended for pearls or gemstones.
Soap and Water
Mix a few drops of liquid dish soap in warm water and immerse your jewelry in the mixture for a minute. Remove, wipe dry, and buff to bring out the shine.
Boiling Water
For hard metal jewelry, this is an easy and inexpensive solution. The heat loosens the dirt, which can then be wiped away. Do not use this method for pearls or gemstones.
