You know one when you see one - that clump of dirt and dust that floats around your hardwood floors, congregating in the corners and making your home look unkempt. That's right, a dust bunny.
What are dust bunnies?
According to Merriam-Webster, a dust bunny is a ball of dust that forms in places that are not swept or dusted often. In reality, dust bunnies are made up of much more than dust!
Any pet parent with a shedding companion knows that dust bunnies also involve hair. Beyond that, they can contain dead skin cells, spider webs, lint, and any other debris that might be present around your home.
Held together by static electricity, dust bunnies often start as one large particle and collect other smaller particles as they travel across flat surfaces.
Rascally rabbits! Dust bunnies can harm your home.
Beyond being an indicator of a house that needs a good cleaning, dust bunnies actually pose a few threats to your household environment. Those rascally rabbits can actually clog the area of your electronics that emit heat and cause things to overheat!
As you can imagine, dust bunnies are also an indicator that your home is full of potential allergens that might aggravate more sensitive sinuses.
How to banish the bunnies and take control of your home!
The simplest way to avoid dust bunnies populating your home is to dust and clean your floors frequently. For people with indoor pets or living in areas prone to high levels of dust, this might be as often as 2 times a week. In most standard environments, however, once a week is usually frequent enough to keep those bunnies at bay. Upgrading the filter you use in your central heating and cooling system can help control dust as well.
It is critical, however, that you are capturing dust and other particles and not just spreading them around your home. Be sure to use the right kind of vacuum for the type of flooring in your home. If you have hardwood or laminate floors, don't forget about the area rugs you probably are using on top of those surfaces. Take rugs outside at least four times a year and shake them out to dislodge any particles that may be festering.
